This essay was written for my unit on Consciousness and Psychology. The unit gave an introduction to the problem of consciousness as viewed from psychological, physiological, computational and philosophical perspectives. A central question was whether or not consciousness can be understood within a scientific framework.

The effectiveness of banner adverts when browsers complete different tasks

This is my third year project. It was mainly motivated by two factors; firstly, to illustrate the effectiveness of utilising the internet for recruitment of participants and the hosting of experiments, secondly, to investigate a phenomena known as 'banner blindness'.

How, if at all, has studying this course changed the way you think about mental difficulty? Why?

This essay was written for my unit on Contemporary Psychoanalysis. The unit primarily focussed on Kleinian theory and practice. A focus was upon a psychoanalytic model of the mind but the course also looked at psychoanalysis as a method of therapy.

Discuss factors that contribute to obesity. Explain and justify their relative importance

This essay was written for my unit on Nutrition and Behaviour. The unit examined the relationship between nutrition and behaviour and their implications for health and psychological well-being.

Consider the topic on which you are running your third year project. Do the problems that Newell outlined in his ’20 questions’ paper still apply to the area?

This essay was written for my unit on Cognitive Modelling. The unit covered models in various domains in cognitive science; memory, skill acquisition, decision-making, choice behaviour and categorization. Symbolic, connectionist, dynamic and ecological models were covered.

Compare and contrast Miller's "Sexual brain" and Dunbar's "Social brain" hypothesis of cognitive evolution

This essay was written for my unit on Evolutionary Approaches to Psychology. The unit encouraged critical and analytic thinking about evolutionary approaches to psychology. Sexual selection, mating strategies, risk taking and homicide, reciprocity, parental investment and modularity were considered.

Are dissociative disorders and autoscopic experiences linked?

This essay was written for my unit of Neuropsychiatry. This unit provided knowledge of neurological disorders linked in their phenomenology to psychiatric symptoms. Focus was on evaluation of psychiatric symptoms from a neurological perspective and evidence to bridge the mind-brain dichotomy.

How have TMS studies contributed to knowledge of brain plasticity?

This essay was written for my unit on Neurorehabilitation. The unit examined the application of biological, cognitive psychology and neuroscience disciplines to the rehabilitation of people with brain damage of various causes.

Diffusion model report

This is a report written for my unit of Computational Neuroscience. The .m files are available as a zipped file here. The unit provided an understanding of the computational principles of biological computations performed in the brain, which give rise to cognitive functions.
